Three Things to Look For in Your Next Realtor
Whether you’re new to the housing market and looking for your first condo, or you’re a seasoned homeowner who just put your third house on the market, the realtor you choose can determine what type of experience you have. Here are three characteristics of a great real estate agent that can really take the stress out of buying or selling your home.
1: Always Available By Phone
Even in today’s fast-paced world, I believe there’s no excuse not to pick up the phone for a client. A busy realtor may be working with a number of clients at once, but he should always make time to either answer the phone or call back within a few minutes. Texts are appropriate during off hours, and may even be the client’s preferred method of communication. But if your realtor is too busy to talk, then he or she is likely too busy to give you the time and attention you need.
2: A True Local
More people are flocking to cities now than ever before, and realtors are catering to a lot of out-of-town clients. A changing urban landscape also means that housing market trends can vary widely depending on the city or even the neighborhood. It’s important to find a realtor who’s familiar with what’s going on in your local area and knows where the hot spots are. If your realtor isn’t native, he or she should at least have 10+ years working in the area and know where the market’s headed in the next few years.
3: Willing to Cater to Your Needs
It’s an old adage that realtors should go the extra mile for their clients, but it’s true in every sense of the word. With so many realtors to choose from, look for one who is responsive, in tune with your needs, and makes you feel like their most important client. If you’re selling your home, they should do their research even before your first meeting. If you’re buying, they should take the time to listen to and thoroughly consider your “must haves.”
Real estate is often the most important — and costly — transaction you’ll ever make, so make sure to find someone who’s truly on your side throughout the entire process — from touring your first Colonial to pouring that glass of celebratory champagne.
